Tower of London Visitor Spotlight

We thought it would be interesting to turn the spotlight on some of the people who visit the Tower of London Tour website. So we are making this section of the site available to our visitors who have either interesting stories to tell about the Tower of London, or who might be doing other interesting things that have Tower of London connections.

Making The Tower of London With Matchsticks!

We were very pleased to receive an e-mail from Mr Dave Gough. Dave is 56 years old and lives near Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. His great grandfather, Sir Hugh Henry Gough, VC was a Keeper of the Crown Jewels from about the 1890's.

Dave has a very interesting hobby, he makes models out of matchsticks! He is currently painstakingly piecing together a matchstick model of the Tower of London. The model was started May 10th and we thought it would be of interest to our visitors if Dave could keep us up to date on his progress and include some pictures and commentary on putting the model together.

Dave has also made other matchstick models including a copy of HMS Victory, a 60cm model of Big Ben, as well as a model of Sydney Harbour Bridge.

As you might imagine building models with matchsticks can be very challenging. For instance Dave has said one of the problems he had was finding out how to bend the matchsticks without breaking them to form the curves of the turrets. He solved this with a wood burning iron. This is what the model looks like after 1500 matchsticks.
